Savannah James, wife of NBA star Lebron James, is giving back to her hometown of Akron, Ohio by launching the Women of Our Future mentorship program.
More than just a basketball wife, mom and businesswoman, Savannah James is a philanthropist who is dedicated to the educational advancement of the young women of her hometown community. In 2013, she launched the I PROMise Makeover, an annual event that encourages Akron girls to be confident, and helps prepare them for prom. She also volunteers for her husband’s LeBron James Family Foundation to help Akron students achieve their dreams through education.
For Women of Our Future, the primary focus centers around not only providing an atmopshere of inspiration it also gives high school girls one-on-one mentoring, academic support and encouragement.
James states, “I wanted to start the ‘Women of Our Future’ program because I know the struggles and pressures a lot of these young women are facing during these tough high school years, and I want them to know they are supported every step of the way,” James said. “I’m passionate about empowering and encouraging these young women because they are the future leaders of our community. I’m honored and excited to be in a position to work with them.”
The program’s inaugural group will start with 16 girls from Buchtel High School, Savannah James’ alma mater. Each participant has been paired with a mentor, and the Women of Our Future is working with Akron’s iCare Mentoring network to provide sustained support.
In addition, Savannah as also honored at the “For Women, Forever” annual dinner, hosted by the Women’s Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation. The event raised nearly $100,000 for the permanent endowment fund, whose grants improve the health, safety and economic well-being of women and girls in Summit County.
